Since the Great Barracuda Fiasco of 2016 came to an end, I’ve been trying to figure out what the hell I do now. One of the better ideas I think I’ve had, inspired by my friend getting a REALLY nice one, is a BMW 2002.
This is a ‘73 2002tii I found on Craigslist, not too far away. I don’t know much about it except that it’s ‘complete’ and his price is “$11", which I imagine is $1100 but you never know.
I’m told rust is the main issue with these, specifically shock towers. Anybody else know anything else I should look for?
For that matter, who has ideas for a $1000-ish project car?

Buy it.
And then give it to me :)

Then you’d have an XJ6, an Alfa, a BMW, and you’d still have to take the bus because none of them are working.
In all seriousness, you'd probably have the single most Oppo car collection you can have without having a Miata or a Peugeot.

most likely 11000 these days...
my wife's regular 2002 was valued at 14000 post accident.

I know, they're crazy money. I've been meaning to call the guy but haven't gotten to it.

Any tii listed that low is pretty much a parts car at best. Also, getting the mechanical fuel injection to work properly basically requires the use of a specialist.
In terms of what to look for in an 02, rust on the rear shock towers is the number one issue, theres also some transmission issues that tend to creep up, mainly bad 2nd gear synchros and output flange problems.

According to the results of the 1973 1000 lakes rally, here are cars that are better than the BMW 2002:
Ford Escort RS1600
Volvo 142
Porsche 911
Saab 96
Opel Ascona
Fiat 124 Rallye
Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV
Skoda 120S
Morris Marina
A BMW 2002 took 17th place. Just behind a Morris Marina. You may not be planning on racing on dirt, but it’s an interesting list anyway, and a few of those cars can be touched for much less than a BMW 2002.

4 speed got sold, the 273 is still hanging from a cherry picker in my garage. I got basically top dollar for the 4 speed, so that was good.

thats too bad.......... well, its good that you got good money on it, but too bad you let it go......... you could of built the273 up, and then put that WHOLE driveline in WHATEVER you happened to find......

Need more photos and need to know about the condition of the car. Also what parts it has. All big factors. Shock towers are the easiest place to look. Frame rails, spare tire well, and inner front fenders are key as well.

I've been meaning to call on it, just haven't had time. I might give the guy a shout today during my lunch.
